By exfoliating you help the skin get rid of dead skin cells. This softens the skin, improves blood circulation and nourishes it. It is very relaxing and you can do this at home. There are all kinds of body scrubs that you can easily make yourself. You can make scrubs from sugar and olive oil, or from honey for soft skin or an Indian scrub from chickpea flour with turmeric and milk.
Purify your skin
A person automatically renews the skin and loses thousands of old skin cells every day. The older you get, the slower the cell renewal process works. In young people, the cells are renewed between 20 to 28 days and in the elderly this takes a little longer. By exfoliating the skin, old skin cells are removed and this makes the skin smooth and nourished. In addition, scrubbing contributes to better blood circulation and can help against pimples. If you use a nice scent, it is also wonderfully relaxing. After scrubbing, apply a delicious body lotion to your skin.
Exfoliate on the body
The skin on your body is less vulnerable than the skin on your face. That is why you can choose coarse exfoliating salt or an exfoliating glove for the body. It depends on your skin type how often you can exfoliate. For normal to oily skin, you can exfoliate up to twice a week. For dry and sensitive skin, it is better to limit this to twice a month. Don’t scrub too hard, because once you’ve removed the dead skin cells, scrubbing extra hard can damage the new skin cells.
You can exfoliate very well with an exfoliating glove. It is also good to do after hair removal or shaving because it helps prevent ingrown hairs that can irritate. Try out different exfoliating gloves and see which one you like better. They all have a different effect. Some are made with the fibers of luffa, a natural exfoliating sponge. You can also exfoliate with a loofah itself (other names are loofah and loofa). Always let the sponge dry thoroughly after use so that it can last longer.
Luffa is the natural scrubbing sponge and comes from the sponge cucumber. This is an annual plant that grows in the tropics and bears four to forty centimeter long fruits that resemble cucumbers. There is a reticulate pattern of vascular bundles on the inside. You can obtain this fibrous tissue by peeling the fruit, soaking it in water for a while and then removing the pulp and seeds. Luffa is not available everywhere, but it can be found in some stores that sell wellness items.
Different types of body scrubs
It is not difficult to make a delicious scrub yourself. After the treatment, rinse thoroughly and apply a delicious body lotion or oil. Some examples of how to make homemade body scrubs are mentioned below.
Against winter skin
Scrub your skin in the shower room or bathtub with (coarse) sea salt and spray yourself with nice lukewarm water. Step out from under the water jet and apply the salt with circular movements. Pay particular attention to the rougher areas of your body, such as the elbows, knees, heels and buttocks. Then rinse it off and dry yourself. Apply an oil to your skin. You can also mix a cup of sea salt with some olive oil. Make it smell nice with a few drops of essential oil, or add some orange blossom water. Be sure to moisturize yourself afterwards because salt dries out the skin a bit.
For dry and sensitive skin, it is better to use sugar instead of salt. Mix sugar with olive oil to form a paste. You can also use brown sugar instead of regular sugar. What is also tasty is mixing a cup of brown sugar with half a cup of honey and adding three tablespoons of lemon juice and a tablespoon of grated ginger.
For people who want to be even gentler on their skin: mix two tablespoons of honey and one tablespoon of milk powder. Honey has a soothing effect on the skin.
Super sesame scrub
For glowing skin, you can make a mixture of one cup of liquid honey, half a cup of sesame seeds and a handful of dried lavender and peppermint. Mix these ingredients into a nice blend and rub your cleansed body with it. Leave it on for twenty minutes and rinse it off in the shower. The result is tingling and glowing skin.
Indian body scrub
This scrub is used by women all over India. Mix a tablespoon of chickpea flour with a pinch of ground turmeric and two teaspoons of milk. First dampen your body and apply it instead of soap. The ingredients can be purchased in the store.
This is a cleansing (body) scrub that is good for mature skin. The recipe comes from Indonesian mountain villages. Grind a handful of kemiri nuts in a mortar and mix with some crushed galangal. Scrub yourself with this. The scrub visibly absorbs the dirt that your skin has collected recently. You can buy peeled kemeri nuts in stores.
You can also exfoliate with coconut. Mix grated coconut with grated carrot in a mortar and add a little kemiri oil and coconut oil. Scrub yourself with this and then rinse it off. Then you apply a nice oil, cream or lotion.
A wrap is a mask for the entire body. Apply this to yourself and then lie down in a large towel or sheet for about twenty minutes. You can then rinse yourself and rub it on the still damp skin.
