Being healthy is true wealth

If you want to influence your health in a positive way, it is important to exercise regularly. You certainly shouldn’t start working very fanatically all of a sudden. A change in mindset is a good start. Exercise is just part of it and will make you feel better about yourself. Find as many moments of exercise as possible in your daily activities.

You should always consult your doctor first if you have any questions about your health or if you suspect you are seriously overweight. This article aims to inform and can of course never replace the advice of a qualified physician.

What is your motive?

When you ask people why they want to stay in shape you get a variety of answers. A large number of women find it important to keep their body as slim as possible. A large number of fitness practitioners also find that regular exercise keeps them looking younger. But another important reason is not often heard: cost savings. Now no one knows what healthcare in the Netherlands will look like in the future. But there is a good chance that we will have to contribute more and more ourselves.

A healthy body: a good investment!

Keeping your body in shape does not guarantee good health, but it does help. Being overweight puts you at a much greater risk of a number of so-called lifestyle diseases. This includes cardiovascular problems and adult-onset diabetes. A lack of exercise and an unhealthy diet can lead to constipation. In addition, regular exercise is good for your mental health. When you exercise, all kinds of substances are produced that make you feel better.

Power supply

With a healthy diet you also contribute largely to reducing the risk of obesity. Limit excessive use of sugar and alcohol. Eat according to the guidelines of the Nutrition Center: lots of whole grain products, fresh vegetables and fruit, low-fat dairy and limited use of saturated fats. Look ahead. Just fill your lunch box yourself. Then you know what you are eating and this is generally friendly to your wallet.

The daily portion of exercise

Exercise is simply part of your daily routine, just like brushing your teeth twice a day. So exercise every day. Take the stairs as much as possible. Cover short distances on foot or by bike. Actually, the form of the movement is not that important as long as you keep moving. Recent scientific research has even shown that it is better for your health to be active all day long than to sit in your chair during the day and then exercise intensively for an hour in the evening.

How do you bring movement into your daily life?

In the morning: have a healthy breakfast and go to work by bike or on foot if possible. At your workplace, go up the stairs. If you have an office job: even standing for five minutes every half hour seems to have a positive impact on your health. Try going for a lunch walk during your lunch break. Do not eat too heavy a meal at lunchtime because then your activity and concentration will drop dramatically. On the way back from work you ride an extra lap on your bike. If there is a nice walking location you could go for a walk. In the evening you have a light dinner and try to do something active. If you table heavily, you will have less desire to exercise.

Leave the car

Living completely without a car is quite difficult. Still, you could try to leave the car parked as much as possible. Grab your bike or set out on foot for a small purchase at the local supermarket. This also applies to visits to friends or acquaintances. Try using your feet, bicycle, bus and train on an outing. Simply make visits an adventure.
