Transsexuality: gender teams

There are two gender teams in the Netherlands. The largest gender team can be found in Amsterdam, at the VUMC. There is also a smaller gender team in Groningen, at the UMCG. Below you will find more information about registration and introduction to both gender teams.

VUMC

The gender team in Amsterdam is part of the KCG-VUMC (the gender dysphoria knowledge center). Dozens of transsexuals are treated every year in Amsterdam. More information about this gender team can be found on the VUMC website.

Report

No referral letter is required to register with the gender team in Amsterdam. The gender team itself can be contacted directly.

Interview

Before the treatment is started, an intake interview takes place. The first part of this conversation consists of a conversation with an intern or endicrinologist. Based on a number of questions, it is determined whether treatment with the gender team is the right choice. A brief physical examination is then performed. After this, the coordinator of the gender team will explain the working method and what can be expected from the further treatment.

First consultation with psychiatrist/psychologist

It can sometimes take several months before the first consultation with a psychiatrist/psychologist takes place.

UMCG

The gender team in Groningen is a lot smaller. An average of 10-20 transsexuals per year get the green light here. This gender team is part of the psychiatry department. More information about the gender team in Groningen can be found on the UMCG website.

Report

Direct registration is not possible with the gender team in Groningen. A referral letter from a general practitioner or psychologist is always required.

Interview

The intake interview with the gender team in Groningen also consists of different parts. First of all, an extensive conversation takes place with an intern. The life story is discussed and transsexual feelings are discussed. Sometimes a psychologist or psychiatrist is also present. After this conversation, an extensive psychological examination is carried out. After this, the living situation and support (support from family/friends) are examined and the results of the psychological research are discussed.

First consultation with psychiatrist/psychologist

After the intake interview, a decision will be made whether treatment by the gender team is desired. If this is the case, an appointment will be made with a psychologist or psychiatrist. It can sometimes take several months before the first conversation with the psychologist or psychiatrist takes place.
