The medicinal power of marjoram

Marjoram is more often called marjoram or real marjoram in the Netherlands. Some people call it sausage spice. Real marjoram originally comes from the Mediterranean region. It also contains carvocrol, ocimene, cadinene, geranyl cetate and citral. In addition to antibacterial properties, these substances have anti-inflammatory properties. Because of these substances, marjoram is effective for muscle pain, rheumatic diseases and flatulence.

A marjoram tea can counteract nausea and prevent flatulence.

 

Marjoram in folk medicine

In Crete, marjoram is still used in folk medicine today. It is a drug used to treat: sore throat, toothache, rheumatism, lack of menstruation, diabetes, obesity, kidney and liver problems and external wounds such as snakebites. In ancient times, marjoram was seen as a medicinal herb all over the world. The following diseases were treated: colds, flu, bronchitis, asthma, arthritis and muscle pain. In Chinese medicine, marjoram is still a medicine for colds, vomiting, fever, dysentery, gout and malnutrition in children. Marjoram oil can kill lice. Marjoram can treat white discharge and soothe menstrual pain. The herb should not be eaten during pregnancies and excessive uterine bleeding. Eating a lot of marjoram during pregnancy can most likely trigger a spontaneous abortion.
