Hair care for different hair types

By using the right shampoo and conditioner, you keep your hair healthy and beautiful. Long hair, hair that is often blow-dried or hair that has been chemically processed, needs extra care. There are hair types: dry, oily or normal hair that need to be cared for in different ways. It is a myth that washing hair often makes hair oilier. In case of dandruff you can use a special anti-dandruff shampoo.

Basic rules of hair washing

For the daily care of the hair, you can apply some simple rules. The water should not be too hot, and do not use too much heat when blow-drying the hair. It is preferable to let the hair dry naturally. Do not rub too hard with the towel while drying. Wrap your hair in a towel and press it dry. Before you wash your hair, rinse it thoroughly. Apply the shampoo and massage it from the scalp into the hair with your fingers. Rinse it well and, if necessary, do the same with some cream rinse.

Hair type

Proper use of shampoo and conditioner can help keep hair healthy. But there are also different hair types that all require different care. In addition to the basic type of dry, bold or normal, it can also be straight, wavy or curly. The condition of the hair changes due to aging, stress or chemical treatment such as coloring. Hair care also plays a major role in this.

Greasy hair

Oily hair is usually limp and flat and has little volume. It also quickly becomes greasy again after washing. This is due to the build-up of sebum produced in the sebaceous glands in the scalp. Sebum is a type of natural oil that gets on the hair shaft and forms a layer on it. The body’s sebum production varies. For example, more sebum is produced during puberty due to the presence of male hormones. It is not possible to stop sebum production, but washing the hair daily is the best remedy.

Dry hair

When the hair is dry, it feels rough, tangles quickly and lacks shine. It is difficult to model correctly. Dry hair does not contain enough moisture. This is because the outer layer of the hair has become porous, meaning that the inner layer of the hair can no longer retain moisture. This is more common with long hair. It has had to endure more. Chemical treatments such as dyeing, bleaching and perms can also make hair dry. Therefore, care for the hair with a mild shampoo and an intensive restorative conditioner. This contains substances such as pantheol and proteins. Panthenol helps the hair to retain moisture better and proteins make the hair smoother.

Normal hair

Normal refers to hair that is not greasy or dry. The hair shines and is easy to style. It looks healthy and has not undergone any chemical treatment. You can wash this hair type with a mild shampoo. If your hair is long, you can use some conditioner after shampooing. This protects the hair against harmful external influences and softens the hair.

Shampoo and conditioner

The dirt is removed by foaming the shampoo. An effective shampoo coats grease and dirt without stripping the scalp’s natural oils. Use a mild shampoo that does not irritate the eyes. It is better to use a separate shampoo and conditioner because of the different effects of the product.

Shampoo

The different components of a shampoo each have their own task. These are the most important tasks:

  • Cleaning agent that removes grease and dirt. Two mild cleansers are: ammonium lauryl sulfate and ammonium laureth sulfate.
  • Care additives are anti-dandruff ingredients, moisturizers, plant extracts and fruit extracts.
  • Functional additives include preservatives, fragrances, colorants and substances to regulate acidity.

Cream rinse

Hair that has been chemically treated, often dried with a hair dryer or is long may be affected by environmental factors, which may require a conditioner. Cream rinse helps to keep the outer layer of the hair smooth and to shape the hairstyle better. The hair tangles less and feels soft. Especially in winter, conditioner ensures that the hair becomes less static. Some conditioners contain panthenol and silicone to help the hair retain moisture.

Rose

One of the most common hair problems is dandruff. This can occur with any hair type. It is caused by the top layer of the scalp flaking. The purpose of this is to remove bacteria from the skin. On the scalp, dander can be trapped by the hair, causing them to accumulate. Due to the ideal conditions for bacteria, they will multiply, causing the flakes to only increase. In this case, use anti-dandruff shampoo with prioctonolamine or zinc pyrithione. You can use this shampoo daily. If you see no improvement after two weeks, go to your doctor for advice.

Does hair become oilier by washing more often?

It is a myth that hair becomes greasy if you wash it more often. Regular washing does not produce more sebum. If you wash your hair infrequently, grease can accumulate. Dirt sticks more easily to the greasy surface of the hair. If you suffer from oily hair, you can wash it daily with a special shampoo against oily hair. This shampoo removes natural oils without damaging the hair shaft.
