Low back pain can be very annoying in everyday life. Lower back pain can affect you not only when making movements, but also when resting. Patients often speak of a vague, dull pain, while others describe the pain as a nagging pain that can be accompanied by stabbing pains. You may also feel like your lower back is “locked,” in other words, that your back feels painfully heavy and unwieldy, like a stone. Low back pain can also radiate. In severe cases, lower back pain can disrupt your sleep or compromise your mobility.

Diagnosis lower back pain

Low back pain can be divided into acute pain and chronic pain. Acute pain occurs suddenly and can be very severe, while chronic pain occurs over a long period of time. We are then talking about several months or even years. In the latter case, the cause is usually more difficult to determine and it is more difficult to definitively cure the patient of the low back pain. A correct, very specific diagnosis is therefore very important in order to provide effective treatment. To this end, the doctor will use anamnesis (asking the patient questions), physical medical examination and/or X-rays. For the most detailed possible result, you can opt for an MRI scan of the back.

Causes of lower back pain

Sitting position

People who do a lot of work in the office often adopt bad posture for a long time without realizing it. To relieve the upper back and shoulders, you unconsciously put more pressure on your lower back, simply because this is more comfortable. But after a long time this can take its revenge and you will notice lower back pain. The best way to combat this lower back pain is to improve your posture.

Fatigue

The low back is a crucial point in the human body: it is the lower back that carries the weight of the upper body and at the same time must ensure a smooth transition with the legs. If you start washing dishes in that area, fatigue may occur, such as during sports and prolonged physical exertion. Rest is the best treatment.

Back muscle problem

Sometimes a back problem is due to a muscle problem in the back. The muscles have been used incorrectly or have had to make an effort that they are not used to, for example lugging cardboard boxes or carrying out maintenance work on your house. Rest can provide quick relief in this case, possibly accompanied by a muscle gel or muscle spray to treat the muscles.

Hernia

Related to this are the rheumatic inflammations spondylitis and sacroileitis. These forms of rheumatism can be very persistent and painful and chronically bother the patient.

Treatment and tips for low back pain

Painkillers

If the pain is more severe, you can take a classic painkiller (e.g. paracetamol) or a painkiller that also has an antipyretic and anti-inflammatory effect (e.g. ibuprofen, nurofen). If lower back pain is not resolved with these tips and becomes a chronic problem, it is recommended to seek medical advice from a doctor or pharmacist.

Massage

With a blocked lower back you may feel that it is impossible to move your back without pain. To get rid of this heavy feeling and make your lower back supple again, undergoing a massage can be useful. Some people with lower back pain benefit from a professional massage by a certified massage therapist, which may require several sessions.

Muscle gel or patches

In addition, you can apply heat plasters to improve blood circulation and ease the pain. The same effect can be obtained by using a muscle gel that supports the muscles of the lower back.
