African beauty secrets: Shea butter and Baobab oil

African women take good care of their skin and hair, despite the harsh conditions. They have smooth, elastic skin that shines beautifully and looks well-groomed and supple. How do they do that? What is their secret?

Shea butter

Shea butter, or Karité butter, comes from West and Central Africa and is extracted from the Karité tree. The Karite tree, or butter tree, only occurs in the savannah of Africa. The tree needs 15 years to produce the first fruits. The berry-like fruits can grow to several centimeters in length and consist of more than 50% fat. African women used shea butter to protect the skin against the strong sun rays, but also against cold and wind. (Note! Western women generally do not have as dark skin as African women, light skin allows the sun’s rays to pass through! Everyone with light skin needs sun protection, something that is virtually absent in Shea butter!)

Dry skin

Shea butter is a wonder for anyone with dry skin. Because Shea butter has a high content of unsaponifiable components, it is ideal to use as a nourishing and restorative care product for skin and hair. Shea butter is rich in many essential vitamins that improve the skin’s elasticity and hydrate it. Shea butter penetrates very deeply into the skin and makes the skin soft and supple. Using shea butter is also recommended for dry lips, shins or dry cuticles! Dry baby bottoms benefit from the regular use of Shea butter!
Shea butter also stimulates healing processes: it helps restore sunburned skin. By regularly using shea butter on your skin, it is said to improve blood circulation.

Baobab oil

Baobab oil is made from the fruits and seeds of the Baobab tree that grows in the savannahs of Africa and Madagascar. The Baobab tree holds thousands of liters of water and almost everything on the tree is usable. The oil has a strong rejuvenating effect and is ideal for aging skin. It tightens the skin and keeps the skin color nice and even. The oil does not clog the pores of the skin and contains all the essential vitamins, antioxidants and fatty acids that every skin needs.

Face mask

The terre dOc nourishing facial mask for dry skin is Ecocert certified and carries the Bio Cosmetique label. The facial mask contains both Baobab oil and Shea butter. It is a wonderful facial cleanser that also serves as an excellent night cream. Baobab products have a strong health-promoting effect on Baobab users. It is not without reason that the tree is called “Tree for Life” and the fruits of the Baobab: “The King of all Super Fruits”. Both the fruit and the seeds of the Baobo tree are used in various beauty and care products.
