Healthy eating: Sweets among superfoods

You may know that broccoli and forest fruits are healthy and are considered superfoods. But what about watercress? Or pumpkin seeds? Or kale? There are many superfoods that are not only tasty, but are also full of antioxidants, vitamins and essential fatty acids. Some examples of superfoods recommended by nutritionist Glen Matten, which can be fairly easily incorporated into anyone’s daily diet.

Pumpkin seeds

Pumpkin seeds are a healthy snack. They may not immediately make your mouth water, but they are damn tasty! Pumpkin seeds are full of important minerals such as magnesium, zinc and iron. And they are full of good fatty acids. Pumpkin seeds keep your immune system up to standard and your cholesterol levels at the right level. A handful of pumpkin seeds are a great sweet among the superfoods and they are perfect to put in a salad or with yogurt with muesli. Eating pumpkin seeds is very popular among Spanish youth.

Antioxidant

Besides being tasty, kale in a stew is an excellent healthy snack among the superfoods! Due to its deep green color, kale is rich in antioxidants and carotenoids that strengthen your immune system and protect your skin against the sun’s harmful UV rays. Kale is also good for the bones as it contains calcium and vitamin K.

Oats

Oats are also such a great superfood! Oats are full of soluble fiber, good for bowel movements, the intestines and a slim figure, but oats are also full of antioxidants, phenols, minerals and vitamins. Oats are excellent against high cholesterol and diabetes. The big advantage of oats is to use oats during breakfast: the slow releases into the blood keep you feeling full for longer. Oats can be mixed well with cinnamon, apple pieces and raisins, or with banana and coconut.

Watercress

Watercress comes from the cruciferous family like broccoli and has almost the same benefits and properties as broccoli. Scientists are busy researching watercress: it appears that watercress plays a major role in the prevention of cancer. Watercress contains many phyto-nutrients, vitamins C and K and calcium. Watercress works well in lettuce or as a substitute for lettuce. But watercress is also a healthy superfood in a farmer’s vegetable soup!

Cereal

Quinoa is a grain and according to some even an ancient grain. Quinoa is now available in almost every supermarket. Quinoa is very nutritious and full of proteins, essential fatty acids and minerals. Quinoa is an excellent meat substitute thanks to its proteins and B vitamins. Quinoa is an exceptionally healthy superfood that can be used in any number of ways: mix it for breakfast with yoghurt, nuts, banana and cinnamon. Or as a substitute for rice, pasta and potatoes. Delicious to make a couscous-like dish.
