Organic baby food

Good nutrition is essential for good health. This is especially true for babies and young children, because their digestive tract and immune system are still developing. Organic baby food exposes the baby or toddler to potentially dangerous substances to a much lesser extent than regular food, is generally more nutritious and may play a role in protection against allergic complaints or in the proper development of the immune system (Van den Vijver et al. ., 2009).

What is organic baby food?

Organic baby food is ready-to-use food or drink intended for children from 0 to 3 years, the ingredients of which are produced in a natural (without chemical-synthetic pesticides and artificial fertilizers), environmentally friendly and animal-friendly manner, and which do not contain artificial fragrances, colors or flavors, contain preservatives or genetically modified ingredients.

The naturalness of organic food

The advantage of organic baby food compared to regular baby food is that this food is more natural in several ways.

  • Organic agriculture does not use chemical-synthetic pesticides, artificial fertilizers or genetic modification.
  • In organic livestock farming, no or much fewer hormones, antibiotics and medicines are administered to the animals, which benefits the quality of the meat, milk and eggs produced by them.
  • All (plant or animal) organic foods do not use artificial additives such as chemical flavors, fragrances, colors and preservatives.

The nutritiousness of organic food

Organic fruits and vegetables contain more bioactive substances (such as antioxidants) and an average higher vitamin C content than regular fruits and vegetables. Harmful micro-organisms (such as antibiotic-resistant bacteria) are less common in organic meat products and organic milk products contain a higher content of fatty acids considered healthy (omega-3 and CLA) than regular milk products.

The health effects of organic food

In 2013, research into the health effects of organic food compared to regular food is still in its infancy. The available research into the health effects of organic food has found indications that the consumption of organic food may play a role in:

  1. protection against allergic complaints or the proper development of the immune system, and
  2. a lower risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer.

The quality of organic baby food

The quality of baby food available in the European Union meets the highest standards and its production is continuously and strictly controlled (Baby Food Commodities Act Regulations). Organic baby food has even stricter quality requirements than regular baby food. Organic is a legally protected term. Organic baby food is recognizable by the organic quality mark (or organic quality marks) on the packaging of the product (Production and labeling of organic products).

Organic quality marks

An organic quality mark is a brand or identification mark for a controlled organic product. Organic quality marks come in many shapes and sizes. The mandatory quality mark for all certified European organic products since January 2012 is the European organic quality mark (recognizable by the EU logo). In addition to the European organic quality mark, national or regional logos may be used. The Dutch quality mark for all certified European organic products is the EKO quality mark. In the Netherlands, the quality of organic products is checked by the Skal Foundation.
