Erasmus MC: walk-in consultation hours for STDs

STDs, or sexually transmitted diseases. It is a difficult subject, if not taboo. If you want to have yourself examined, you naturally want it to be quick and as easy as possible. One of the places where this is possible is the walk-in consultation hours of the Erasmus MC in Rotterdam. By appointment or without, you can get there quickly. How, what, where and at what possible costs? Read more. STDs, or sexually transmitted diseases. It remains a difficult subject. Also if you want to be examined, for example because you are unsure about sexual contact. Because the Erasmus MC in Rotterdam noticed that many people are interested in an ‘accessible’ consultation hour for the diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, a walk-in consultation hour has been started. The aim is to offer fast and ‘patient-friendly’ care for people who want to be examined for a possible STD.

Why this walk-in consultation?

There was already such an initiative within Erasmus MC that existed until 2009, the so-called STD clinic. But the work of that outpatient clinic was moved to the GGD Rotterdam-Rijnmond (Schiedamsedijk 95). However, Erasmus MC also appeared to remain interested in consultation hours held by specialized doctors and nurses. Hence this initiative.

STD walk-in consultation hours: who and what?

STDs involve an overlap of various medical specialties. This means that in the field of STDs the expertise of employees from the departments of Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases and Dermatology is combined. Anyone who reports to the STD walk-in consultation hour and asks whether he or she has an STD will be examined for symptoms. This mainly concerns inflammation of the urethra, vagina and anus and other symptoms that may suggest that there are sexually transmitted diseases.

With or without an appointment

The freely accessible consultation hours are on weekdays from 8:00 am to 9:30 am. An appointment is not necessary or possible for this. However, there is only room for six people. The Rochussenstraat building is open from 7.30 am, and you could say ‘first come, first served’. The first six people who report are examined and, if necessary, treated. But it is also possible to make an appointment for the consultation hour on Wednesday. That can be done online. A referral is possible for the consultation hours, but you can also come on your own initiative.

(Possible costs

On Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, consultation hours are held by Dermatology staff, and on Thursdays and Fridays by staff from the Internal Medicine outpatient clinic. Erasmus MC will declare the costs of the visit and any treatment to your health insurer. This may incur costs, partly because of the deductible that you have to pay yourself as standard. The address: Rochussenstraat Building, Burgemeester sJacobplein 51, 3015 CA Rotterdam. Dijkzigt metro station.
