Natural remedies for sunburn

The symptoms of sunburn appear several hours after sun exposure. They take several days or even several weeks to disappear completely. Sunburn is also the cause of dry skin, wrinkles, liver spots and skin cancer. In rare cases, an excess of UV rays can even be life-threatening. Here are some natural remedies to treat and prevent sunburn.

Natural remedies for sunburn


Milk is one of the best natural remedies for sunburn. Soak a cloth in milk and then place the wet cloth on your burned skin to reduce itching and pain.


Apply a few drops of lavender essential oil to the sunscreen. This reduces both pain and itching.

Vitamin E

Any cream or oil containing vitamin E is effective in reducing itching after sunburn.


Wrap some ice cubes in a towel and place it on the sunburn to treat pain naturally. Do not leave the ice cubes in the same place for too long, because the extreme cold can damage the skin.

Cold tea bags

Do you want to remove the skin discolouration caused by sunburn? Then place some cold tea bags on the burned area.


Drink plenty of water if you suffer from sunburn. After all, the heat removes moisture from the skin and these deficiencies must be replenished by drinking water.

Yogurt, turmeric and barley

Make a mixture of yogurt, turmeric and barley and apply this homemade ointment to your sunburn.


Cut a cucumber into slices and place them on your burned skin. This will quickly reduce the sunburn. In addition, the cucumber will replenish the moisture deficiency in the skin. Instead of a cucumber, you can also use a raw potato.

Apple cider vinegar

Pour a dash of apple cider vinegar into the bath water and soak in it for twenty minutes to treat the symptoms of sunburn and heal the skin faster. You can also use regular vinegar instead of apple cider vinegar.

Tomatoes and buttermilk

Mix one part tomato juice with six parts buttermilk or buttermilk. Apply this generously to the sunscreen and wash it off after thirty minutes.

Olive oil and apple cider vinegar

Mix one part olive oil with one part apple cider vinegar and apply to your sunscreen. Leave on for one hour and then wash off.

Flour, milk, olive oil, honey and eggs

Boil some lettuce leaves in a little water. Let cool. Then soak a few cotton balls in this natural remedy and dab it over the burns.

Prevent sunburn

Prevention is still better than cure. Finally, some tips to prevent sunburn:

Sun cream

Use a sunscreen with a protection factor of at least twenty every day, even when there is no sun. Apply the cream half an hour before going outside and repeat every two hours if it is very sunny outside. You should apply sunscreen even more often if you sweat a lot or have just gone into the water.

Cosmetics with lanolin

Avoid cosmetics containing lanolin before going out in the sun. After all, lanolin increases the risk of sunburn.

Avoid sun

Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. During this period the sun’s rays are strongest. Try to schedule outdoor activities at different times as much as possible. If you must be outside, seek the shade.

Clothes, hat and sunglasses

Clothes are still best to protect your skin against sunburn. You can also wear a hat or cap to protect the skin of your face. However, clothes still allow some of the sun’s rays to pass through, so a good sunscreen remains necessary. Always wear sunglasses when you go out into the sun. Choose sunglasses that block 99% to 100% of all UV rays.
