House dust mite allergy: what you can do about it yourself

Suffering from a dust mite allergy can be very annoying. You often have to sneeze and cough. You may suffer from earache and eczema. You may even feel very short of breath. The difficult thing about a dust mite allergy is that dust mites exist in every home. It is also impossible to get your house dust mite-free. However, there are things you can do to reduce the amount of dust mites in your home.

Wash your bedding regularly at a minimum of 60 degrees

The dust mites settle in house dust, mattresses, pillows, curtains, carpeting, rugs and furniture. Dust mites feel completely at home in your bed. That is why it is important that you wash your bedding every week at 60 degrees for at least an hour. The dust mites do not survive such a wash. Nowadays, many new mattresses have removable covers that you can also wash at 60 degrees. You don’t have to do this every week, but it certainly doesn’t hurt to wash these covers regularly. If you are going to purchase a new mattress soon, choose one that is made of synthetic material.

Dust and vacuum regularly

If you suffer from a dust mite allergy, it is wise not to have carpet in your home or to bring a rug into your home. Laminate or wooden floors are a better alternative. If you have carpet or a rug in your home, vacuum it at least three times a week. It is best to vacuum smooth floors weekly and wipe them with a wet cloth. You should vacuum your furniture with textile coverings at least once a month. Dust your furniture at least once a week with a wet cloth. If your allergies really bother you, it is best to have someone else vacuum for you and not be around while vacuuming. If you have curtains in your home, wash them at least once a year. It is best to wash net curtains more often.

Go exercise

The symptoms of dust mite allergy often get worse when you have a cold. You then have to sneeze a little more and cough a little more often and harder than people without allergies. Regular exercise improves your resistance. If you eat healthy in addition to exercising, you will notice after a while that you catch colds less often. Your allergy complaints will therefore also reduce significantly.
