Fever, what is its function and how can you relieve it?

A normal body temperature is between 36.5 and 37.5 degrees. If you feel ill, you may often have a fever and develop a fever. I describe in this article what you can do about fever and when you should go to the doctor. And what is a fever actually good for?

Function fever

Fever is annoying, but it is a useful response from the body. It is a signal that the body is fighting against an infection, both viral and bacterial. The increase helps fight the infection. So try not to use medication if you have a fever, the sooner you will get better. If all else fails, you can of course use medication. Fever is harmless in itself. There is often confusion that you can tell how sick you are by the height of the fever. For example, you can have a fever of 40 degrees with the flu and 38.5 with pneumonia. It is better to look at how long you have had a fever.

Symptoms of fever

You may shiver with a fever, which usually happens when your body temperature rises quickly. The body temperature of an infectious disease never rises above 41.7 degrees! In children, it is especially important to determine severity of the disease by looking for the following symptoms:

  • Severe diarrhea.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Vomit.
  • Bad drinking.
  • Stiff neck.
  • Drowsiness.

If the child has 1 or more of the above symptoms, please contact your doctor. In principle, you do not need to go to the doctor with a fever, only if you or your child have the above symptoms, if your child is younger than 3 months old, if the fever lasts longer than 4 days and if the fever suddenly drops after a few days. will rise.

Treatment of fever

There are various pieces of advice you can take to reduce fever without using medication. And there are things you need to keep a close eye on, which you need to do even if your body doesn’t feel like it. Especially children, but also drink extra. Moisture is very important and a fever makes you sweat more and you therefore lose more fluid. You don’t have to eat if you don’t feel like it and neither do your children. You can safely let children with a fever play outside. Do not dress children too thickly, because the fever itself makes them warm enough. Sleep comfortably under a sheet or thin blanket. Children should also wear thin, loose-fitting clothing. It is not wise to engage in strenuous physical exertion as your body is fighting a battle against a disease. There are also various fever-reducing medications available for purchase. This includes paracetamol, ibuprofen, aleve (naproxen sodium), aspirin, paracetamol with caffeine (stimulating and strengthening effect), diclofenac (Voltaren K). Always read the package leaflet carefully and if you are not familiar with the medicine, ask your pharmacist or drugstore if they can tell you how and when it is best to take the medicine. Also pay attention to how long you can use the medicine and how often. Do not exceed this!
You also have homeopathic remedies for fever, such as oscillococcinum, caltrivat, echinaforce, nisylene and nisykind. It is normal with homeopathic remedies that the complaint first worsens before it helps. So don’t be alarmed if you experience more discomfort at first.
If you have any questions or concerns, always consult a doctor! They can give you good advice on what to do. my view on
